I am intending on building a new workstation. I have a 7960x AMD Ryzen Zen 4 Threadripper. The motherboard available in my local area is a Gigabyte TRX50 AERO D and I also have an AMD 6800 XT gpu from a previous MacOS build. Thoughts?

See page four of the manual (link below) to view the block diagram of the motherboard.

  1. The Intel USB4 controller might be the biggest issue on that motherboard.
    1. As only a few Apple Silicon MacBookPro/Air systems have Thunderbolt/USB4 controllers and they are not likely to be the same as your Intel USB4 controller.
    2. Not sure it is supported, so anything connected via the USB4 controller will also be suspect in macOS. Until proven otherwise.
  2. Not sure what level of Kernel Patching the Zen 4 Threadripper will require, it could be the current AMD Kernel Patches work.
    1. It won't exceed the max number of Cores/Threads allowed in macOS at 24/48 respectively.
  3. You will probably end up doing a bit of trial and error testing, regarding the Boot > Quirks in the config.plist, to get the correct combination so the system boots.

I have not attempted to make an AMD-OSX system since Zen1 1600X on High Sierra. Exciting challenge.

32/64 like old threadripper in latest OSX is the real limit

problems could be more complex and this could involve, as in the past ,a big modify on the openruntime.efi
Old patches worked well in threadripper trx40 (opencore devs said that patches were borked but it was memory manager which failed)

interesting try :)
i would start with an old EFI based on trx40 parameter and post a debug log

This time last year I was closely following the x670E AM5 work of CaseySJ and others of this forum and intended on participating but the components I had access to were used for a Linux web-server. I am glad there is interest and enthusiasm for this TRX50 endeavor and rest assured, I have on hand all the parts necessary for this build including but not limited to, Motherboard, PSU, CPU plus heatsink, compatible GPU, R-DIMM DDR5, and 5.0 NvME. I will provide photographs as the build proceeds. The case I will be using has not seen a new build since 2013 consisting of a Intel i7 3770k, 32Gb DDR3 1600MHz, hosted on a GA-Z77x-UD5H with Nvidia 680 2Gb. Cheers!

Don't use a Samsung NVME drive, as they are known to be problematic when used as a boot drive for macOS. A SanDisk or Western Digital NVME drive would be ideal, as they both work in macOS.

Using an old case may limit the USB Ports available on the front of the case, specifically the lack of a Type-C port.

Your TRX50 motherboard has the following Internal headers.
  • 1 x USB Type-C® port with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 support, available through the internal USB header
  • 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports available through the internal USB header
  • 4 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports available through the internal USB headers

The Qualcomm WiFi/BT card won't work in macOS. You will need to swap this for an Intel WiFi/Bt card, something like the AX210 would work.

Both Ethernet ports should work with the correct Kexts, or config.plist settings.

The Audio on this board is split front and back. So you may have to choose one or the other to be disabled. I am not sure if AppleALC.kext will activate both the front ALC897 codec and the rear ALC4080 codec (possibly USB audio). If the rear Audio is USB connection then it will need AppleALCU.kext.

I would also recommend installing Monterey or Ventura first, as they are easier to get running than Sonoma. It is simple to upgrade to Sonoma once you have macOS installed.

Yes, I am aware of the Samsung issue and do have on hand both Crucial and WD NvME’s.

Case wise, I understand that this 2006-era case is limited as compared to the modern Lian-Li and Corsair cases of my most recent server builds but perhaps its Volkswagen air-cooled type2 transporter bus inspired charm will win your heart. It is a Cooler Master Stacker 830 I bought off Amazon years ago and it has traveled many miles with me as a video-editing and digital audio workstation

I certainly do not expect the Qualcomm “Wi-Fi 7“ to function, neither is it a necessity for my specific use case but I do have a spare PCI-E x4 card on-hand with a Broadcom 802.11 AC “Wi-fi 5” chip that worked well in Mojave. My experience with the more modern onboard Intel Wifi as included with Z690 and Z590 Intel motherboards was positive, however, so I may consider such a task of swapping that component if deemed necessary.

I do have two spare GPU’s for testing purposes, an AMD RX 560 and the oldie-but-goodie GeForce 680. The AMD 6800 XT & 6600 XT I have are both in active use in other systems at the moment both feeding 12 Bit RGB HDR monitors…using Windows of all things. The four 7950x systems I built this past year are all running Linux as 24/7 web servers and are rock solid. Therefore when it came time to upgrade my own aging 3rd Intel, I naturally chose Zen4. Although Intel was considered, I never was entirely happy with my 12900 Z690 DDR5 build, neither operating Windows or MacOS, Linux performed fine though.

I admire your patience and calm
I would not have lasted all this time without trying my trx40 a few years ago🥹
Thread could be useful also for you but you could have additional problem with new dsdt of your motherboard
Very curious about your OSX tries

I have yet to make progress on this…but as a warm up I setup an Intel 2600k and intend on practicing the Ryzen patches on a Zen1 1600x.

I pulled two Crucial T700’s from another system, one has a Linux installation and the other is unused. May we proceed. Also in my research, I came across this forum thread on TRX40 bare metal: https://macos86.it/topic/3307-discussion-trx40-bare-metal-vanilla-patches/page/155/
T700 both in 2 and 4TB has given me a lotta headaches on my Trx40. The Z540 works mostly well, though random restarts soon after booting are not uncommon. Though once it passes a one minute mark after reaching desktop, the system is pretty solid - so I suggest go with the WD or other crucial drives.

Also, assuming (really hoping) you can boot macOS on this, will it be possible to get it running on wrx90 system too? Since TR pros from 3000 and 5000 were kinda never hackintoshed

I have been reading over the AM5 Guides, assuming there are some similarities. It has been a long time since I have even attempted an AMDx86 MacOS. I feel I have dragged my feet on this project but I found it necessary to rebuild the simpler systems first.

Not TRx related, but I brought an AM4 B550m system online today booting Ventura, may attempt the Sonoma update. I am at least now more refreshed on the process.
