AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to boot the macOS BigSur installer on a laptop with a locked/restrictive BIOS, but I'm getting stuck at a persistent kernel panic related to the Embedded Controller / ACPI ERAM region. I use OCAT.

Hardware Specifications:
  • Model: Thomson N15R53
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3500U (Picasso / Zen+)
  • iGPU: AMD Radeon Vega 8
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Storage: 256 GB SATA SSD
  • Bootloader: OpenCore 0.8.8+

Current EFI Setup:
  • Kexts: Lilu, VirtualSMC, ECEnabler (v1.0.3+), NootedRed (v0.8.10+), RestrictEvents.
  • ACPI: SSDT-EC-USBX-AMD.aml enabled.
  • ACPI Patches applied:
1. EC0 _STA to XSTA (Find: 0014095F535441 / Replace: 00140958535441)
2. Rename _REG to XREG (Find: 5F524547 / Replace: 58524547)

Issue:
During the verbose boot process, the kernel crashes with the following error:
"Error: No handler for Region [ERAM] (ffffff93621d14b0) [EmbeddedControl]"

Even with ECEnabler.kext active and the _REG to XREG ACPI patch enabled, the OS fails to attach a handler to the native BIOS ERAM region before the panic occurs.

I have attached my config.plist and the boot error screenshot. Any guidance on how to properly bypass or patch this ERAM region call for this Ryzen BIOS would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

The Locked Bios may mean your laptop has Fast Boot, Secure Boot & CSM enabled and you won't be able to disable these options. All of which could cause a kernel panic when booting OpenCore and macOS (any version).

You should see if the laptop manufacturer offers a service to unlock the bios for devices bought secondhand. Without this I don't think you will get past this current KP.

Thank you very much for your reply, i will try and tell you if it works !!!!!!!

You need to think carefully about how you plan to install macOS on this laptop, with its single SATA SSD. Normally if dual booting macOS and Windows, you need to install macOS first, so the OpenCore EFI is located in the first (Hidden) partition on the drive. Windows and or Linux are installed to separate Partitions on the drive after macOS.

As it is not clear if you can install a second drive in your Thomson laptop, specifically for macOS. You may have to erase your Windows 11 Pro drive to enable the macOS installation.

I would recommend you have a read of this OpenCore Multi-booting guide.

8GB of RAM is not really sufficient for an AMD laptop running macOS. As at least 1GB will need to be allocated to the integrated AMD graphics card. It is better to have more, I usually run my AMD laptop hacks with a base 2GB of VRAM and where possible increase this to 4GB, usually when I have more than 16GB RAM present in the system.
