Since SmallTree is currently broken on macOS 12 I took this as a reason to upgrade my networking. Especially for ITX the only option would be a dongle.
There are several out there that are suitable, see the reviews on ServeTheHome
Specifically I'm using the QNAP QNA-UC5G1T. The Dongle works out of the box on both Big Sur and Monterey, but only up to 1000BaseT.
To take advantage of 2500BaseT or 5000BaseT a driver from Marvell is needed: https://www.marvell.com/support/downloads.html
Select macOS and download the "Marvell AQtion USB 3.1" macOS Driver package and extract the pacific.kext.
The pacific.kext can just be added to OpenCore as any other kext. After that, you can enjoy the full speed of your upgraded Ethernet connection
