Are you trying to update an existing install or doing a fresh one?

Is this natively installed or within a VM on your linux distro?

If it's updating an existing install, just make a bootable usb installer, don't bother with updating it from within the OS, that often causes problems.

Your Ethernet port may not work in Sonoma. The Intel I211-AT is known to be problematic in recent releases of macOS, it will be why you are using AppleIGB.kext and not the SmallTrees kext.

If you have a USB to Ethernet adapter that might fix your issue. I know other members here have had to use the USB to Ethernet Adapter to get around this issue.

The alternative is to install a PCIe Ethernet card (Intel or Realtek) that is supported by IntelMausi.kext, RealtekRTL8111.kext (1GB) or LucyRTL8125Ethernet.kext (2.5GB card). There are plenty of these macOS compatible Ethernet cards available on Amazon from as little as £9.

Are you using the boot arg e1000=0 with AppleIGB?
