I'm going to be changing my boot drive, so that I can use the current one as storage.

Can anyone confirm that a SATA Samsung EVO 870 500GB, is fully compatible and TRIM capable?
I'm using Tahoe 22.6 :)

Thanks :D

Safe?

Personally I wouldn’t go with the Samsung Evo SSD. I would opt for a Western Digital, SanDisk or TimeTec SSD.

These brands all work without issue in macOS, TimeTec used to provide Apple with Memory and Drives for their systems. The controllers used by WD and SanDisk in their SSD's are fully compatible with macOS.

Price is currently higher than normal, but that seems to be the case for any NAND product.

I've been offered a 870 EVO 500GB SATA, cheap from a friend, so I need to know it that drive in particular works?

Sorry I have no experience with that specific SSD.

I have used older Samsung Pro SSD’s in macOS but none from the Evo range. So I can’t say if it will or it won’t work well with macOS.

From what I could find online, the SATA's are fine, it's the NVME's that have the issues, the 970 EVO etc, but there's a rumour that an SSD firmware update fixed this.

@Edhawk I'm collecting the drive later, am I correct in the understanding that, if it formats, installs Tahoe fine and TRIM enables, that means it works and there can't be any surprises after that?

As IIRC the 970 NVME's etc affected had issues formatting or enabling TRIM?

I shall report back with my findings anyway :)
