Yeah it'll backup the install so it can be booted on either another partition or drive. You need this to boot to so you can install the update to the main drive and replace a couple files.

Yeah I've understood the principle now ! Sorry for my questions ... Do you think the clone can be on an external USB3 drive ? Or I better make a partition on one of the internal drives ?

I think macOS could cause problems (hackintosh mode) to boot from USB External drive ... I know on the real thing there are no problems booting from USB.

As long as you've got fully working USB it should be fine but remember even with USB 3.0 it won't be as snappy than on a HDD/SSD.
