Motherboard compatibility

I'm not sure where to put this. Since I'm interested in Catalina I put it here. Please move if this is the wrong place. With that said, if I understand this correctly, Some boards work very well, Some are a pain, and some won't work at all. How do I find out if my current motherboard is compatible?

High from Coastal North Carolina

Resident new guy here. Recently became interested in MacOs but like many, cant afford that new mac pro and don't like imac form factor. It looks like a have a lot of reading to do. No worries though. The weather is bad anyway. So this weekend looks like cold beer and good read.
