It would seem that the ping I was running was indeed keeping the connection alive. If it let it idle it dies out and the only way to get it back is switching from 1000 baseT to 100 or vice versa.
Do we know why the dev of smalltree kext isn’t working on this?

He no longer has a motherboard using the I1225 controller so he has no means or reason to work on the kext anymore. Plus SmallTree on Linux that the kext was based on dropped support on the Linux end when Big Sur came out

The I211 port is now working with the same old SmallTree kext file on Monterey ß7 on my TRX40 mobo. (The same file works with Catalina-BigSur-Monterey.)

The entire time is was a macOS problem, not a SmallTree kext problem.

https://forum.amd-osx.com/index.php...-alternative-to-smalltree.2028/post-13182Note on latest versions of Monterey:
The version posted at the link below works to an extent. Putting the system to sleep will break it and it's not stable for everyone. Many face random connection drops. SmallTree isn't working at all. I'd recommend getting either supported WiFi or add-on PCI LAN card.
